How Do I Ensure I Can Access OILwatch On My BlackBerry?
There are two modes of receiving online data (including OILwatch) on your Blackberry:
  • Via the Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES). Generally set up for corporate accounts.
  • Via the Blackberry Internet Solution. Generally set up for individuals.
You can access OILwatch on both solutions - but the settings that you may need to set up on your device will vary.

Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES). Requirements for OILwatch
  1. To ensure you can access OILwatch when you are on the BES, you must make sure you have MDS (Mobile Data Service) enabled. Contact your company IT support if in doubt.
The MDS is part of the BES and acts as a proxy between the handheld and external world - the Internet. MDS encrypts and compresses the traffic between the handheld and the server, so it is more secure and faster.

Blackberry Internet Solution. Requirements for OILwatch
  • To access OILwatch via the Internet solution requires direct TCP/IP connections.
  • You must be using BlackBerry OS version 3.8 or later.
  • Go to Settings/Options -> TCP (if you already have TCP APN details entered you do not need to change)
  • If you do not have TCP APN username/password details entered you will need to contact your service provider and ask for them - they are generic to that provider and not user specific. Sometimes you can find APN settings on your provider's website.
  • Go to Settings/Options -> TLS -> TLS Default (make sure this is set to handheld)

Trouble Shooting
Problem: I can download the application, but get an error message when I log on to OILwatch: "Your MDS has been configured to deny SSL requests to servers that have certificates which are untrusted or expired."
Fix: Make sure your TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocol is set to 'Handheld'.
Action: Go to Settings/Options ->TLS -> TLS Default = make sure this is set to Handheld

Problem: I get repeated prompts for server trust
Fix: Make sure Prompt for Server Trust in your TLS settings is set to "No".
Action: Go to Settings/Options->TLS-> Prompt for Server Trust = make sure this is set to NO
Action2: Sometimes a popup box prompts you to choose whether you want the system to 'always ask for this prompt'. Choose the appropriate box and 'tick' using the space key.

Problem: When I try to connect to OILwatch on my BlackBerry I receive the following message "Cannot connect to OILspace server. IOException: Could not find a service book entry for IPPP."
Fix: Make sure you have entered your APN details for your TCP settings.
Action: Options -> TCP -> enter APN (Access Point Name) username/password .

Problem: When I try to connect to OILwatch on my BlackBerry I receive the following message "Your MDS has been configured to deny SSL requests to servers that have certificates which are untrusted or expired."
Fix: Make sure your BlackBerry is set to trust Thawte signed certificates.
Action: If on a BES device - you will need to contact your service provider and ensure that their MDS is configured to trust Thawte signed certificates. If on non-BES device Go to Settings/Options -> certificates

Problem: When I try to connect to OILwatch on my BlackBerry I receive the following message "Cannot connect to OILspace server. IOException: Malformed Address. Returning null connection"
Fix: Your device hasn't connected to its GPRS properly.
Action: Your signal could be weak or down. - try connecting again.
